Method
It is a very simple art form of painting. You Don’t need any specialized knowledge but just a creative mind and artistic flair.. So go ahead
Materials Required
•Cloth/Handmade paper
•Trace paper
•Fabric colours(for cloth)
•Poster colours (for paper)
•Black outliner
•Carbon sheet
So let’s start
Step 1:
Choose a design
Step 2:
First draw the required pattern on the trace paper and copy the design into the cloth/paper using carbon sheet.
Step3:
If using Cloth Paint using fabric colours and let it dry well.
Use Poster colours for paper. The colours are applied flat with no shading. There is normally a double line drawn for the outlines, with the gap between the lines filled by cross or straight tiny lines. In the linear painting, no colours are applied. Only the outlines are drawn.
Step4:
Draw outlines using the black colour and again leave it to dry for 24 hours.
If applying on cloth iron on the back side of the cloth.

Tips and tricks
1Choose a design that is colourful !It is often seen that tradionally there are only basic colours used like orange , green and red but you can add colurs like pink, purple, blue to make it more attractive.
2- Choose a design that it is easy to make.
The design pattern should be simple and clear !
3-Trace the desin well.
If you do not trace it well ,you will definety find yourself in trouble later. You can make improvements in designs like changing the features of face, as it generally seen features in Madhubani are not sharp.
4-Choose a theme.
If you are making more than one painting than choose a theme eg.Krishna because each painting has certain meaning or situation
5-Don't limit youself .
If you don't want a painting then you can always make a bookmark, card or table mats with Madhubani and laminate them.
Add beautiful Border .
Make sure you have a border . It will add new dimensions to your painting

ya that was quite a simplified version...maybe a coat of boiled cowdung initially will make it more authentic.
Thanks Megha...I am glad you liked it
@ Charu
Yes, have made it a little simplified according to modern day trends... traditionally it is done with rice mixture on a wall coated with cowdung.. But you can imagine the smell:-)

I have a doubt,if i do madhubani painting on cloth,what type of cloth i should choose?Like cotton,gaada?
Also before start painting on cloth, should it be washed and ironed?
Please do solve my doubts.Thanx.
Hi Clare. If you are making madhubani on a paper then you can use a black skethpen or a pilot pen. Well if you are making on a cloth try using a black fabric paint with the hep of a brush
Thanks Gayatri and Rashi for all your encouragement
Hi Geeta ,
You can choose a silk piece or khadi cloth. I have myself made few Madhubanis on silk . Well you must wash the cloth. But only dip it in water and don't rinse .Iron the cloth well.

Is there a special outliner pen or something that you get for this, in case you want to do it on paper.. If so please let me know what do we tell the shopkeeper for the outliner.. regards
Hi Swati, yes tis is really awesome, even i did a painting on my own after reading these instructions, and ofcourse the painting came out very well.Ans to ur Q:u will get a special pen in all stationeries ask for "ROTRING ISOGRAPH PEN".This comes in various nib sizes,i feel .40 size suits well.Use hand made paper if u r planning to do on paper,"faded sandal, half white, yellowish cream" color papers suit well for madhubani than usual white.hope these infos r useful!!cheers :)

HI friend,
Thanks for the tutorial,I have a question where can i get handmade paper. I searched in chennai when im on vacation but could not get it.. Is it possible to tell me where to get handmade paperr...
Thank you...
Hi Sandhya,
Handmade papers r available in all stationery shops n big paper marts. If u r in chennai, then t.nagar, parry corner is the best place to find it.Otherwise search for nearest stationary store in google,u will find some for sure.If u get a chance to come to bangalore, then "staples" is the right choice :) all the best!!
Thanks Githu,
One more qust.. Is it okay if I paint with acrylic or fabric paint on handmade paper?
Hi Sandhya,
Acrylic / poster color is good.I'm not sure about fabric colors on handmade paper.Only draw back with acrylic is,it will dry very quickly so mixing has to be done in small portions.Draw back with poster color is u wont get good shades of colors when u mix colors, but a very good one to paint.I 've tried it once with posters. My next one is gonna be with acrylics :)a bigggg project.BTW i'm not githu, its geethu thanks!!
sorry Geethu. Where can i get trace for madhubani painting... so u gona free hand ur big project....
goodluck with ur project...Thanks...

Thanks but where can i get pictures to trace...
Hi,never ever do tracing for madhubani..i too tried to trace once, but it didnt look nice at all, then i myself tried freehand and it came out very well...do select a theme(say like parrots on tree,or peacocks beneath the tree etc..) and go ahead...all the best1!
@K.Madhavi:Ask for isograph pen with permanent ink(pen usually used for engineering drawings) at any good stationery store.Or go for good water proof gel pen,one of my friend use gel pen only for paintings and has good results...all the best!!
